Accuracy

Material factual claims should be verified using reliable sources before publication. Where an authoritative primary source is available, we prefer it over secondary summaries.

Fact and allegation

We distinguish established facts from allegations, opinions, estimates, forecasts and interpretations. An allegation is reported as an allegation unless reliable evidence establishes it as fact.

Independence and balance

Reporting should not be written to promote a political party, government, opposition movement, company or other interested organization. Relevant competing evidence and responses should be represented where they materially affect understanding of the story.

Balance does not require presenting unsupported claims as equivalent to well-established evidence.

Sources

We prefer original documents, official statistics, judgments, legislation, scientific publications and direct evidence whenever reasonably available.

Uncertainty

If important facts remain uncertain, we say so.

Corrections

Material errors should be corrected transparently when identified.

Commentary and analysis

Where an article contains analysis or opinion rather than straight reporting, this should be clearly identifiable to the reader.
