Sri Lanka has appointed 350 Health Service Assistants to hospitals and health institutions across the Northern Province as part of measures to strengthen the region's health workforce.
The appointment programme was held in Jaffna on September 18.
Of the new recruits:
- 45 are to be attached to Jaffna Teaching Hospital;
- 5 are to be attached to the Jaffna Nursing Training School;
- 300 recruited through the Provincial Council are to be attached to other hospitals and health institutions across the Northern Province.
The appointments cover recruits under both the central Health Ministry and the Northern Provincial Council.
New Tellippalai doctors' quarters
A new four-storey Medical Officers' Quarters complex at Tellippalai Base Hospital has also been formally handed over.
The facility was constructed at a cost of Rs.196.6 million.
It can accommodate approximately 20 medical officers.
The completed accommodation facility and the new Health Service Assistant appointments represent separate workforce and infrastructure measures but are being reported together because both form part of the same Northern Province health-capacity programme highlighted during the same official visit.
Important limitation
Available reporting does not establish:
- the Northern Province's remaining Health Service Assistant shortage;
- the remaining doctor-accommodation deficit;
- the individual allocation of all 300 Provincial Council recruits among hospitals.
