Further implementation details are now available for projects within the Rs.7.148 billion four-hospital development programme.
At Trincomalee District General Hospital, construction has begun on an eight-storey Cardiology Unit with a reported project value of Rs.2.403 billion.
The project is being implemented with financial assistance from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The planned building will include operating theatres, outpatient facilities, inpatient treatment facilities and laboratories.
Construction is currently scheduled for completion around May 2028.
At Mannar District General Hospital, construction has also begun on a new Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit.
The Mannar project is being funded through a Rs.600 million grant from the Government of India.
The facility is intended to expand emergency and trauma-care capacity, and construction is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2028.
India is also supporting a separate project at Mullaitivu District General Hospital. The Mannar and Mullaitivu projects are each valued at Rs.600 million, giving the two Indian grant-assisted projects a combined value of Rs.1.2 billion.
These developments provide more detailed implementation information for projects already included in the four-hospital programme.
They do not represent separate new hospital programmes and should not be published as duplicate project-announcement articles.
They also do not mean that the facilities are already completed or operational.
Previously reported programme
The Rs.7.148 billion regional hospital-development programme has moved from its previously announced commencement schedule into the formal project-launch stage.
Foundation-stone ceremonies were held on September 16 for projects within the four-hospital programme.
The programme includes new cardiac-care complexes at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and Trincomalee District General Hospital, together with new health facilities in Mannar and Mullaitivu.
The commencement of construction at Trincomalee was marked at a ceremony attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Trincomalee cardiac-care complex has been reported as a JICA-supported project valued at approximately Rs.2.4 billion.
The wider four-project programme has a stated combined value of approximately Rs.7.148 billion.
The September 16 ceremonies confirm that the programme has moved from announcement/planned commencement into the formal launch and construction-start phase.
They do not mean that the four facilities are completed or operational.
Previously announced programme
Sri Lanka is preparing to begin four major hospital-development projects with a combined reported investment of Rs.7.148 billion, including new cardiac complexes in Anuradhapura and Trincomalee.
Foundation-stone ceremonies are scheduled for September 16.
The projects include:
- a Rs.3.545 billion cardiac complex at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital;
- a Rs.2.403 billion cardiac complex at Trincomalee District General Hospital;
- a Rs.600 million facility at Mannar; and
- a Rs.600 million facility at Mullaitivu.
The Anuradhapura and Trincomalee developments are supported through Japanese assistance/JICA-related support, while the Mannar and Mullaitivu developments use Indian assistance, according to the Government information underlying the programme.
Project status
The four projects are due to commence. The facilities are not complete or already treating patients, and the full Rs.7.148 billion is not represented as already spent.
