Construction has begun on 10 new Arogya Health and Wellness Centres across Sri Lanka under a Government programme intended to expand access to primary healthcare at community level.
Foundation stones for the 10 centres were laid on September 1.
According to the Government, Rs. 50 million has been allocated for construction of each centre.
The centres initiated in this phase are planned for Kalutara South, Balangoda, Kimbulawala in Monaragala, Akmeemana in Galle, Omara in Hambantota, Dehiowita in Kegalle, Suriyapaluwa in Gampaha, Hingurakgoda in Polonnaruwa, Gemunupura in Badulla and Pitawala in Nuwara Eliya.
Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the Government expects construction of these centres to be completed by December 2026.
Construction of another 25 centres is expected to begin in October.
The Government says 39 Health and Wellness Centres are already providing services.
The wider programme envisages establishing 1,000 centres to strengthen preventive and primary healthcare and bring services closer to communities.
According to the Government, Rs. 1.5 billion is to be invested in the programme during 2026, with another Rs. 2 billion allocated for 2027.
The completion dates, future construction programme and wider 1,000-centre target remain Government plans and should not be interpreted as facilities that have already been completed.
