Businessman Arrested Over Alleged US$80 Million Overseas Transfers Disguised as Import Payments

Sri Lanka Police's Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) has arrested a 34-year-old businessman from Maradana over alleged overseas transfers totalling approximately US$80 million, or around Rs.23 billion.

Police say the transactions occurred between 2023 and 2025.

According to investigators, the funds were transferred to foreign countries through telegraphic transfers (T/T), purportedly as payments for imported goods.

Investigation continues

The FCID is continuing investigations into the transactions.

At this stage, the following remain allegations under investigation:

  • whether the transfers were illegal;
  • whether the claimed imports were fictitious;
  • whether false documentation was used;
  • the suspect's criminal liability.
