The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has arrested former Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority chairman Opatha Vithanage Prasanna Sanjeewa over allegations concerning the issue of passenger-transport permits.
According to information attributed to CIABOC, investigators allege that permits were issued outside the prescribed tender procedure during his tenure.
The alleged conduct is said to have caused a government loss of approximately Rs. 4.16 million while providing benefits to third parties.
The former chairman was arrested by CIABOC investigators on September 15 and was due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
The arrest is an investigative and procedural development.
It does not establish that the former chairman committed the alleged offences.
The alleged financial loss, unlawful benefit and violation of the applicable transport-authority requirements remain allegations subject to the judicial process.
