Former Krrish Group director Janaki Siriwardena has been remanded until October 6 in an investigation into an alleged Rs.70 million bribe involving Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
Siriwardena was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption after appearing before the Commission to provide a statement.
She was subsequently produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court.
What investigators allege
CIABOC investigators told court that Siriwardena is accused of providing Rs.70 million to Namal Rajapaksa in return for assistance in facilitating Krrish's acquisition of Transworks Square in Colombo Fort, land belonging to the Urban Development Authority.
Investigators allege that the Rs.70 million was paid in three separate instalments.
The Magistrate also directed prison authorities to allow CIABOC investigators to record a statement from Rajapaksa in connection with the investigation.
Allegations are not findings of guilt
Siriwardena's arrest and remand are established procedural developments.
The alleged payment, its purpose and the roles attributed to those under investigation remain allegations being investigated by CIABOC and have not been established by a final conviction.
This investigation must also remain separate from the Airbus-related proceedings involving Namal Rajapaksa.
The appearance of the same politician in both investigations does not make them the same case.
