Navy Seizes About 820kg of Fish Suspected to Have Been Caught Using Explosives in Muthur

The Sri Lanka Navy has seized approximately 820 kilograms of fish suspected to have been caught using explosives during a search operation in Muthur.

The operation was carried out on 9 September 2026 by personnel from SLNS Parakumba together with SLNS Gokanna of the Eastern Naval Command.

Lorry intercepted

Acting on information received, naval personnel intercepted and searched a suspicious lorry in the Muthur area.

The search resulted in the recovery of the fish consignment.

Suspect

The Navy said a 40-year-old man from the Poduwaikattu Senduur area was apprehended in connection with the incident.

The:

  • suspect;
  • lorry; and
  • fish consignment

were handed over to Muthur Police, in coordination with the Muthur Fisheries Inspector, for further legal action.

The Navy describes the fish as suspected to have been caught using illegal blast-fishing methods.
