Police have arrested a man they identify as the alleged planner and driver behind the major robbery at a tourism and foreign-employment agency in Thalawathugoda.
The robbery occurred on 1 September.
Police-attributed reports say the stolen property comprised approximately:
- Rs.650 million in cash; and
- gold jewellery valued at around Rs.150 million.
Together, these figures form the widely reported approximately Rs.800 million value associated with the robbery.
Suspect arrested in Mulleriyawa
The suspect was reportedly arrested in Mulleriyawa during an operation by the Western Province Southern Crime Division.
Police say officers recovered:
- part of the stolen money;
- a vehicle allegedly used in the robbery; and
- a motorcycle connected to the investigation.
Police allegations
Police allege that the arrested suspect had previously worked at the agency and was involved in planning the robbery.
Reports attributing a motive, debts, planning meetings, distribution of proceeds and involvement of other suspects are based on Police investigative claims.
They are not court findings.
Investigation continues
Police say information has been obtained regarding additional suspects and that investigations are continuing.
The arrested suspect is expected to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court in connection with further legal proceedings, including an identification parade.
