Sri Lanka Police have opened a separate internal investigation into alleged shortcomings and omissions in the investigation involving two containers imported from Pakistan and suspected of containing illegal drugs.
Police said the Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasooriya, instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct the internal probe.
The containers are being held at the CICT terminal at the Port of Colombo.
Main criminal investigation continues
Police say the internal investigation is separate from, and will not obstruct, the main investigation into the two containers and the suspected drug consignment.
The main criminal investigation is being conducted by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau.
What is being investigated
Police have said that alleged shortcomings and omissions were identified in the conduct of the investigation.
The internal inquiry is intended to examine those alleged procedural or investigative lapses.
Scope of the inquiry
The existence of an internal investigation does not establish that:
- any particular officer committed misconduct;
- criminal wrongdoing by Police personnel has been proven;
- the containers have been conclusively proven to contain narcotics.
