Police Take 11-Year-Old Into Protective Custody After Video Allegedly Showing Drug Use Circulates Online

Sri Lanka Police have taken an 11-year-old child into protective custody after a social-media video circulated allegedly showing the child using drugs.

The Police Children and Women Bureau opened an investigation after the video came to its attention.

Police subsequently located the child at a residence in Ganemulla on September 18.

Police said the child was found in what they considered an unsafe environment and was taken into protective custody before being brought to the Children and Women Bureau together with the child's mother.

Further steps are being taken concerning the child's welfare and protection, while the investigation continues.

Protective custody in this context should not be described as the arrest of the child.

The alleged drug use shown in the video should likewise not be reported as medically or judicially established unless subsequently confirmed.
