Sri Lanka Police and the Urban Development Authority have agreed to strengthen security arrangements at 24 apartment complexes in and around Colombo.

The decision followed a special discussion held at the Colombo Deputy Inspector General's Office under Colombo Range DIG Nishantha de Zoysa, acting on instructions from Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.

Police say the programme is intended to protect residents and property at housing complexes developed under the Urban Regeneration Project and maintain law and order in surrounding areas.

Authorities said concerns had been raised about alleged drug trafficking within some apartment complexes and incidents involving damage to public property.

The measures include establishing additional Police posts, increasing regular patrols and strengthening enforcement relating to offences against public property.

Authorities also discussed renovating existing Police posts and identifying suitable locations for additional posts in consultation with the UDA.

Relevant Police stations have been instructed to implement the proposed security arrangements.

The programme is a preventive and operational security measure.

It should not be interpreted as evidence that residents of all 24 apartment complexes are involved in drug trafficking or other criminal activity.

The allegations concern suspected activities within certain locations and individuals, not the communities as a whole.
