President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to advance proposed new drug-control legislation through the relevant parliamentary process in early October.
The Government's stated objective is to seek passage of the legislation by the third week of October.
The timetable was discussed at a meeting of the National Operations Council dealing with the Government's anti-narcotics programme.
Officials also reported that the Government Analyst had completed 8,000 drug-related reports during September following an expansion of analytical capacity.
The meeting discussed stronger digital coordination between Police, courts, prisons and the Government Analyst as well as improvements to the 1818 drug-information hotline.
The proposed legislation has not yet been enacted.
The President's timetable is a Government objective and should not be reported as a guaranteed parliamentary outcome.
