Sri Lanka's Supreme Court has dismissed 40 Fundamental Rights petitions challenging promotions granted across several ranks of the Police Service.
The petitions had been filed by nearly 1,050 police officers who had not received the promotions concerned.
The challenges related to promotions granted between 2019 and 2023 during the tenures of former Inspectors General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, C.D. Wickramaratne and Deshabandu Tennakoon.
The disputed promotions included movements from Police Constable to Police Sergeant, Police Sergeant to Sub-Inspector and Sub-Inspector to Inspector.
In dismissing the petitions, the Supreme Court observed that the petitioners had not provided sufficient information to establish that irregularities occurred in the promotion process.
The dismissal therefore concerns the Fundamental Rights challenges before the Court and should not be expanded into claims beyond what the judgment establishes.
