Twenty-five Indonesian fishermen have been brought safely to Colombo after their fishing trawler capsized south of Sri Lanka in the Australian Search and Rescue Region.
The fishermen were aboard KM Garuda Jaya VI, which capsized on September 22.
Merchant vessel MV Moonstone located and rescued all 25 survivors from the water.
The vessel then contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Colombo.
Navy coordinated transfer ashore
Following the distress notification, the Sri Lanka Navy, through coordination with MRCC Colombo, deployed two naval craft to facilitate the transfer of the rescued fishermen.
The survivors were subsequently brought to Colombo Port, provided with humanitarian assistance and handed over to the Indonesian Embassy for further arrangements.
Multi-agency operation
The initial rescue from the water was carried out by MV Moonstone.
The Sri Lanka Navy and MRCC Colombo subsequently coordinated the transfer and safe landing of the survivors.
Coverage must preserve this distinction rather than inaccurately stating that the Navy alone rescued the 25 fishermen from the sea.
