Sri Lanka has submitted a draft development plan valued at approximately Rs.7.7 billion for proposed improvements to the Anuradhapura Sacred City to the Indian High Commission for financial assistance.
The proposed programme was discussed at a meeting concerning the Anuradhapura Sacred City Development Plan.
The plan has been prepared with the involvement of the Urban Development Authority and the National Physical Planning Department.
The Government intends to begin implementation of the development programme before the end of 2026.
The proposal concerns development and infrastructure associated with the historic and religiously significant Anuradhapura Sacred City.
The project is also being pursued within the context of Sri Lanka–India development cooperation.
However, submission of a Rs.7.7 billion proposal to the Indian High Commission does not mean that Rs.7.7 billion has already been provided to Sri Lanka.
It also does not establish that every component of the proposed development programme has received final Indian approval.
Any subsequent financing agreement, grant or credit arrangement, final project scope and implementation timetable should be reported when formally confirmed.
