The Consumer Affairs Authority says underweight bread was detected at 54 establishments during a special islandwide inspection programme.
The CAA inspected 118 shops and bakeries between 1 and 3 September.
According to the authority's preliminary findings, underweight bread was found at 54 establishments where clear bread-weight information was available.
Weight and price display problems
The inspections also found:
- 76 establishments with improper bread-weight displays; and
- 65 establishments with improper price displays.
These figures represent separate inspection findings.
The figures do not establish that the same establishments accounted for all three findings.
Prescribed bread weight
The required weight is:
- full loaf — 450 grams
- half loaf — 225 grams
The CAA says supply-chain inspections were also extended to bakeries producing or supplying bread.
A total of 81 bakeries were inspected as part of those follow-up investigations.
Where underweight production was confirmed, bakery owners were instructed to correct their production processes.
Further enforcement
The CAA says islandwide raids, bakery inspections and supply-chain investigations will continue.
