The Government has allocated Rs.1.5 billion for a programme to identify and improve dangerous road locations outside Sri Lanka's national road network.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Ratnayake said Rs.60 million will be allocated to each district, with local government institutions identifying dangerous locations and carrying out the necessary improvements.
Memoranda of Understanding with relevant local-government chairpersons and mayors were signed on September 18.
According to the Minister, Cabinet approved the programme in June following a Cabinet memorandum submitted on May 20.
The National Council on Road Safety will provide technical guidance and monitor implementation together with local authorities.
The programme focuses on physical road hazards rather than relying solely on traffic laws and road-safety education.
The MoUs are due to remain in force until December 31, 2026, subject to their terms.
This programme is separate from enforcement measures such as seat-belt or expressway regulations and should not be merged with those stories.
