US$101.3 Million Project Planned to Reduce Landslide Risk at Lower Kadugannawa

A US$101.3 million project is planned to reduce landslide risk along the Lower Kadugannawa section of the Colombo–Kandy road, according to the Government.

The project covers approximately kilometres 96 to 99 of the road, an area identified as vulnerable to landslides.

Financing

The planned financing consists of:

  • US$80 million in foreign financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB); and
  • US$21.3 million from Sri Lanka.

The project is targeted for completion by December 2027.

Work currently under way

Government information indicates that preparatory activities, including stakeholder consultation and planning related to land requirements, are under way.

The project is intended to improve the stability and safety of this important section of the Colombo–Kandy road.

This is a planned and ongoing project. It has not been represented as complete or as having eliminated landslide risk; December 2027 remains a target.
