Sri Lanka's Parliament has passed a private member's motion calling on the Government to introduce an “attractive incentive” for family units in an effort to increase the country's number of births.
The motion was moved by MP Ajith P. Perera and was passed by Parliament on September 11.
Decline in births since 2018
The motion states that Sri Lanka's annual number of births has been continuously declining since 2018.
It also raises concern that a continuing decline in births could reduce the country's youth population in future and have adverse consequences for economic development.
Parliament therefore resolved that the Government should take necessary measures to introduce an incentive aimed at increasing births.
This is a parliamentary policy call. It does not establish a specific cash payment, tax relief, allowance, eligibility rule, application process, implementation date or budget allocation.
