The Parliamentary Select Committee examining Sri Lanka's preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah has decided to summon representatives of local authorities as part of its inquiry into the country's disaster response.
Parliament said representatives of Pradeshiya Sabhas and Municipal Councils will be called before the committee to examine how local authorities participated in official communication and coordination during the disaster.
The committee is conducting a broader study into the lack of preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah and is expected eventually to report to Parliament with proposals and recommendations.
At its recent meeting, the committee obtained information from members of the National Council for Disaster Management and the District Secretaries of Kandy and Matale.
Its examination included early-warning systems, communication between Government institutions and emergency-response procedures during the heavy rain, landslides and flooding experienced in Kandy and Matale from November 23–27, 2025.
Members also discussed establishing formal written emergency procedures, conducting regular disaster-preparedness drills and improving early-warning systems.
The decision to summon local authorities is part of an ongoing parliamentary inquiry.
It does not constitute a finding that any particular Pradeshiya Sabha, Municipal Council or official was negligent or responsible for failures during the disaster.
