The Ministry of Defence has announced that individuals and institutions holding firearm licences are required to renew them during the four-month period.

The renewal window runs from September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.
Eligible firearm owners and institutions are expected to complete the required procedures within this period.
Ministry warns over unlicensed possession
The Ministry of Defence has reminded firearm owners that possessing a firearm without a valid licence is an offence under Section 22 of the Firearms Ordinance.
Failure to maintain a valid licence may therefore result in legal action and penalties under the applicable law.
Private security agencies
The Ministry's announcement also addresses registration and renewal requirements affecting private security agencies.
Private security agencies that fail to complete the relevant registration or renewal requirements within the specified period may face late fees or possible legal action.
Public-service reminder
The announcement concerns renewal of licences for firearms already subject to Sri Lanka's licensing system.
It should not be interpreted as a general authorisation to acquire or possess firearms.
Licence holders should follow the procedures and requirements issued by the Ministry of Defence.
