Sri Lankan railway passengers can now purchase train tickets online through the Government's Pravesha digital platform.
The Ministry of Transport says the facility became available from September 17 and can be accessed through the Pravesha website and mobile application.
Passengers can enter their journey information and purchase tickets electronically instead of relying solely on physical ticket counters.
Electronic tickets can be delivered digitally and use QR-based verification.
The broader Pravesha platform itself predates this week's announcement and has previously been used for railway-related digital services, including concessionary season-ticket arrangements. Sri Lanka Railways currently lists Pravesha among its official online services.
The expansion to online train-ticket purchasing therefore represents an extension of railway digital ticketing rather than the creation of the Pravesha platform itself.
The rollout coincided with the 48-hour railway trade-union strike, but the Government announcement describes the service as an online passenger facility. It should not be characterised as merely a temporary strike workaround without evidence that this was its purpose.
