Twenty Injured After Private Bus Topples Into Canal Near Minneriya

Twenty passengers were injured after a private bus travelling towards Colombo left the Polonnaruwa–Habarana Road and toppled into a dry canal near Minneriya on 10 September.

Police say the bus was carrying around 40 passengers.

The accident occurred near the 7th mile post area.

Hospital admissions

According to Police:

  • 4 injured passengers were admitted to Habarana Hospital;
  • 16 injured passengers were admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital.

Police said none of the injured passengers was in serious condition at the time of reporting.

Cause under investigation

Initial Police reporting said the bus veered off the road after the driver reportedly lost control.

However, investigations into the cause of the accident are continuing.
