Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka from September 8 to 10, India's Ministry of Defence has announced.
Singh will lead a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from India's Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs.
During the three-day visit, he is scheduled to hold consultations with Sri Lankan leaders on a range of issues.
He will also interact with members of the Indian community in Colombo.
India's Defence Ministry said the visit is intended to further strengthen the traditionally close bilateral relationship between India and Sri Lanka, including cooperation in maritime and defence matters.
India and Sri Lanka already cooperate across regional security, defence, economic and trade relations and people-to-people links.
The visit therefore comes within an existing bilateral defence and maritime relationship.
However, the official announcement of the visit does not by itself establish that a new defence treaty, base arrangement or other specific agreement has been concluded.
Separate reporting has suggested that additional defence-related arrangements may be discussed or signed during the visit.
Those potential outcomes should be reported as new developments only when adequately confirmed.
The results of Singh's meetings can be incorporated into this article as an update during the seven-day continuity window where appropriate.
