Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved the presentation of the Appropriation Bill for the 2027 financial year to Parliament.
The decision represents an important step in the preparation of the Government's fiscal programme for 2027.
The Appropriation Bill provides the legislative framework through which Parliament considers and authorises government expenditure for the financial year.
The latest decision, however, is an approval to present the Bill to Parliament.
It does not mean Parliament has already approved the 2027 Budget or the expenditure contained in it.
Detailed allocations, expenditure figures and other fiscal measures should therefore be reported from the formal Appropriation Bill and subsequent Budget documents when they are presented.
Context
The Government has already been undertaking preparations for the 2027 fiscal framework, including the Fiscal Strategy Statement – 2027.
Presentation of the Appropriation Bill moves that process into the formal legislative stage, where the proposals become subject to parliamentary consideration.
