Sri Lanka's unemployment rate was estimated at 4.0% in the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest Labour Force Survey data from the Department of Census and Statistics.
The labour-force participation rate was estimated at 50.0% during the same quarter.
The unemployment rate was 3.8% in the corresponding second quarter of 2025, while labour-force participation was 49.3%.
That represents a 0.2 percentage-point increase in the reported unemployment rate compared with a year earlier.
At the same time, labour-force participation increased by 0.7 percentage points.
The two indicators measure different aspects of the labour market.
The labour-force participation rate measures the proportion of the working-age population that is either employed or actively participating in the labour market.
The unemployment rate measures unemployment among people who are in the labour force.
An increase in labour-force participation can therefore affect the unemployment rate because more people may be entering or actively seeking work.
The 4.0% figure should not by itself be interpreted as evidence of an employment crisis.
Quarterly labour-market estimates are also survey-based indicators and should be interpreted in the context of sampling variation and longer-term trends.
The latest figures provide an updated snapshot of Sri Lanka's labour market during the second quarter of 2026.
