CBSL Purchases US$579 Million From Domestic Foreign Exchange Market in August

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka purchased approximately US$579 million from the domestic foreign exchange market during August 2026, according to CBSL-attributed data reported on September 6.

Central-bank purchases of foreign currency from the domestic market can contribute to the accumulation of foreign-exchange assets and affect liquidity and exchange-rate conditions.

However, the US$579 million figure should not be described as Government revenue.

It should also not be interpreted as meaning Sri Lanka's usable official foreign reserves automatically increased by exactly US$579 million during the month.

The level of official reserves can also change because of factors including external debt payments, other foreign-currency payments and receipts, valuation changes and other Central Bank transactions.

The figure therefore describes the Central Bank's foreign-exchange purchases from the domestic market during August, rather than the net monthly change in the country's usable reserves.

The data provide another indicator of Central Bank activity in Sri Lanka's foreign-exchange market as the country continues rebuilding its external financial buffers.
