CSE Extends Gains for Third Session as ASPI Closes Above 21,600

The Colombo Stock Exchange extended its gains for a third consecutive trading session on September 4, with both major indices rising by more than 1%.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) gained 225.33 points, or 1.05%, to close at 21,620.44.

The S&P Sri Lanka 20 Index rose 63.67 points, or 1.06%, ending the session at 6,058.92.

The ASPI moved above the 21,600 level during afternoon trading as buying interest strengthened across the market.

Market reporting indicated that 175 securities advanced while 57 declined, reflecting broad positive movement during the session.

However, foreign investors remained net sellers during the day by approximately Rs.67 million.

The September 4 rise followed gains during the previous two sessions and therefore marked a third consecutive positive close.

One-day or short-term movements in the stock market can be volatile.

Accordingly, the three-session rise should not be presented as proof that the wider Sri Lankan economy has entered a sustained expansion or that equity prices will continue to rise.

This article reports the market performance recorded at the close of trading on September 4.
