A new housing-loan programme named “Ethera Diriya” has been introduced for Sri Lankan migrant workers, offering loans ranging from Rs.500,000 to Rs.10 million.
The programme is intended to help Sri Lankans employed overseas finance housing-related needs while using earnings remitted through formal channels.
Loan range and repayment
Under the announced scheme:
- minimum loan — Rs.500,000
- maximum loan — Rs.10 million
- repayment period — up to 10 years
A portion of the interest payable on eligible loans is to be reimbursed by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).
Applications are expected to be handled through participating public and private sector banks.
Eligibility
Related Government reporting on migrant-worker loan schemes indicates that applicants are generally expected to provide evidence such as:
- overseas employment;
- employment documentation;
- passport details; and
- proof that remittances are being received through recognised banking channels.
The scheme was announced for launch on 10 September 2026. Applicants should confirm bank-specific eligibility, documentation requirements and application availability with their bank.
