An International Monetary Fund (IMF) team is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from September 10 to 23, 2026, for discussions covering the Seventh Review of the country's IMF-supported reform programme and the 2026 Article IV Consultation.
The mission will be led by IMF Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou.
The visit brings together two important IMF processes.
The Seventh Review will assess Sri Lanka's performance under the reform programme supported by the IMF's Extended Fund Facility, including recent economic developments and progress in implementing agreed reforms.
The Article IV Consultation is the IMF's broader periodic assessment of a member country's economy and economic policies.
During the visit, the IMF team is expected to hold discussions with Sri Lankan authorities and other stakeholders on recent economic developments, implementation of the reform programme and longer-term structural issues.
The team is expected to communicate its findings and conclusions at the end of the mission.
Sri Lanka entered the IMF-supported programme following the severe economic and balance-of-payments crisis that culminated in the country's 2022 external debt default.
The programme has since become a central part of Sri Lanka's economic stabilisation and reform process.
The September mission represents another important assessment of the country's progress under that programme.
However, the arrival of the IMF mission does not mean that the Seventh Review has already been completed successfully.
Nor does it mean that any further IMF disbursement has already been approved.
Completion of a programme review normally requires the relevant IMF processes after staff-level discussions and assessment of programme performance.
Any subsequent financing decision should therefore be reported only when formally confirmed by the IMF.
