The Consumer Affairs Authority has imposed maximum retail prices for specified locally produced canned fish, effective from September 5, 2026.
The prices were introduced through Consumer Affairs Authority Order No. 97, published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 2504/86 dated September 4.
Under the order, local manufacturers, packers, distributors and traders may not sell, offer for sale or display the specified canned-fish products above the stipulated maximum retail prices.
Tuna
For the specified tuna varieties:
- Net weight 155g, with drained weight of at least 105g - Rs.220 per can
- Net weight 425g, with drained weight of at least 280g - Rs.510 per can
Mackerel
For the specified mackerel varieties:
- Net weight 155g, with drained weight of at least 105g - Rs.240 per can
- Net weight 425g, with drained weight of at least 280g - Rs.540 per can
Jack Mackerel
For Jack Mackerel identified in the Gazette as Linna:
- Net weight 155g, with drained weight of at least 105g - Rs.260 per can
- Net weight 425g, with drained weight of at least 280g - Rs.600 per can
The order takes effect from September 5.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has also rescinded its previous Order No. 95, which was published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 2462/40 dated November 14, 2025.
These are maximum retail prices.
They do not mean every retailer is legally required to sell each product at the maximum price. Products may be sold below the ceiling.
The applicable legal maximum also depends on the fish variety, net weight and drained weight specified in the Gazette.
