Sri Lanka's Parliament has passed a motion calling for the necessary legal procedures to bring industries related to petroleum, fuel and water under regulation by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).
The private member's motion was moved by MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha and was among the motions passed by Parliament on September 11.
Why the motion was introduced
The motion states that electricity, petroleum, fuel and water industries should be subject to regulation.
It notes that the petroleum and water sectors have remained outside the intended regulatory framework for more than 21 years because legislation governing institutions including the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has not been amended accordingly.
Parliament therefore resolved that the necessary legal procedures should be implemented to change this situation.
The resolution calls for further legal procedures and does not itself immediately place the petroleum or water sectors under PUCSL regulation.
