The Sri Lankan government is considering a possible relief mechanism for people who lose employment or livelihoods as a result of El Niño-related conditions, according to information released following a meeting of the special Cabinet subcommittee coordinating the government's response.
The issue was discussed at the fourth meeting of the subcommittee, chaired by Environment Minister Dammika Patabendi.
The meeting was held with the relevant officials' committee at the Presidential Secretariat.
Particular attention was given to the possible loss of employment and livelihoods among communities affected by the prevailing climatic conditions and to measures that could provide relief if such losses occur.
However, no final relief or compensation scheme has yet been approved.
No definite payment amount, eligibility threshold or implementation date should therefore be presented as established government policy.
Officials also reviewed measures aimed at limiting possible damage to vegetable and fruit cultivation and preventing shortages in the domestic market.
Authorities said six districts are currently affected by El Niño-related conditions.
The committee also reviewed programmes intended to maintain water supplies so that affected communities can continue their daily activities.
A media briefing is expected on September 4 concerning preparations for the upcoming Maha cultivation season.
Officials also plan discussions with district secretaries and district coordinating committee chairpersons from the six affected districts.
The special Cabinet subcommittee is expected to meet again on September 14.
