Sri Lanka's Government is planning development projects valued at approximately Rs.2 trillion or more for 2027, according to Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa said preparations for next year's development programme are being brought forward so that project implementation can begin without the lengthy delays that have affected previous Budget cycles.
Under the existing process, institutions commonly receive confirmation of Budget allocations after parliamentary approval and then begin project planning and procurement.
Procurement procedures and appeals can subsequently delay the award and implementation of projects until much later in the year.
The Government therefore intends to undertake more planning work in advance of the 2027 Budget and the beginning of the next financial year.
The reported Rs.2 trillion-plus figure represents the scale of development activity being planned.
It should not be interpreted as meaning that Rs.2 trillion has already been spent, contracts worth that amount have already been awarded, or the entire amount represents foreign financing.
The eventual composition of the development programme, individual project allocations and the final fiscal provision will depend on the 2027 Budget and subsequent implementation decisions.
