Sri Lanka’s gross official reserves were provisionally estimated at US$6.905 billion at the end of August 2026, according to Central Bank-attributed data.
The figure includes proceeds from the People’s Bank of China swap arrangement.
Workers’ remittances during August amounted to US$748.6 million.
This was lower than the US$777.6 million recorded in July 2026, but higher than the US$680.8 million recorded in August 2025.
The Sri Lankan rupee was also reported to have depreciated by 5.7% against the US dollar on a year-to-date basis as of September 11.
Reserve interpretation
The gross figure includes the PBOC swap arrangement and is not wholly unrestricted cash. The statistics alone do not establish improved debt sustainability, disappearance of external-debt risks, free deployability of all reserves or a strengthening rupee.
