Sri Lanka recorded 191,704 tourist arrivals in August 2026, a decline of approximately 3.3% year-on-year, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority's completed monthly data.
The corresponding figure for August 2025 was 196,845.
India remained Sri Lanka's largest tourist source market during August 2026, with 47,253 arrivals.
The United Kingdom and China were also among the leading source markets during the month.
The August decline follows a year-on-year reduction recorded in July, when arrivals were around 1.7% below the corresponding period of 2025.
However, individual monthly declines should not by themselves be interpreted as evidence of a long-term collapse in Sri Lanka's tourism industry.
Tourism performance should be assessed using the broader year-to-date trend, source-market composition, tourism earnings and subsequent monthly arrivals rather than a single month's figure alone.
The August data are nevertheless important because they provide a national measure of actual arrivals and help distinguish overall tourism performance from isolated reports about individual tour groups or promotional events.
