Sri Lanka Tourist Arrivals Pass 1.6 Million in 2026

Sri Lanka has recorded more than 1.6 million international tourist arrivals in 2026, according to the latest Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority data.

The cumulative number of arrivals reached 1,609,759 by September 14.

During the first 14 days of September, Sri Lanka received approximately 74,637 visitors.

India remained Sri Lanka's largest source market, with approximately 408,024 arrivals recorded during the year up to the reporting date.

Crossing 1.6 million arrivals represents another numerical milestone for Sri Lanka's tourism sector during 2026.

However, the milestone should be considered alongside the pattern of arrivals across individual months.

Tourism performance has not accelerated uniformly throughout the year, and some recent monthly figures have been softer when compared with the corresponding periods of 2025.

For example, August 2026 arrivals were approximately 3.3% below August 2025.

The 1.6 million cumulative figure therefore shows the scale of total tourist arrivals so far this year but should not by itself be interpreted as evidence that the pace of tourism growth is accelerating in every month.
