Sri Lanka's two major wheat flour suppliers, Prima Ceylon and Serendib Flour Mills, have increased the price of wheat flour by Rs.17 per kilogram, effective from 29 August.
The increase has already prompted price revisions for several flour-based foods sold through canteens.
Canteen food prices increased
The All-Island Canteen Owners' Association announced that the prices of several flour-based short eats, including parata and egg roti, would increase by Rs.5.
The association also announced an increase of:
- Re.1 for a string hopper; and
- Rs.2 for a hopper.
The association linked the revisions to the Rs.17 increase in the price of wheat flour.
Bread price decision still pending
The All-Island Bakery Owners' Association is expected to meet on Monday, 31 August, to discuss the impact of the flour-price increase.
At the time of publication, an increase in the price of bread or other bakery products had not been confirmed.
Consumers should therefore distinguish between the already-announced flour and canteen-food price increases and possible future changes to bakery prices.
Cost-of-living impact
Wheat flour is widely used by households, bakeries, restaurants and food vendors.
Changes in its price can therefore affect the cost of a wide range of commonly consumed foods, although individual businesses may respond differently depending on their costs and pricing decisions.
