The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has announced restrictions prohibiting the promotion and use of alcohol, drugs and other intoxicating substances at events organised using a school's name or official crest.
The measure has been introduced through Education Ministry Circular No. 2026/10.
According to Ministry officials, an event conducted using a school's identity or crest is treated as a school-related event for the purpose of the directive.
The circular gives the Secretary to the Ministry of Education authority to prohibit an event where the directive is being violated.
The measure also applies to school-related major cricket encounters commonly known as Big Matches where the school's name or identity is used.
Ministry officials said the decision followed repeated concerns from parents and other groups about students being exposed to alcohol and drugs in connection with major school cricket events.
The directive is intended to prevent school-associated activities from being used for the promotion or consumption of intoxicating substances.
The circular should be reported as an Education Ministry regulatory measure.
It should not be interpreted as creating unspecified new criminal offences or penalties beyond those established by existing law and the powers described in the circular.
