Sri Lanka's Parliament has passed a motion supporting the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
The private member's motion was moved by Dr. M. L. A. M. Hizbullah.
Parliament's September 11 Business of the House record confirms that the motion was among those passed.
Rationale in the motion
The motion calls for a Medical Faculty to be established at South Eastern University, citing:
- growing needs in Sri Lanka's medical sector;
- international requirements; and
- the university's role in producing graduates for domestic and foreign employment markets.
The motion supports establishing a faculty; it does not establish that student intake, funding, staffing, facilities, clinical training, UGC approval or Sri Lanka Medical Council approval are already in place.
