President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says Sri Lanka's presidential and parliamentary elections will be held according to schedule and will not be postponed.
The President made the statement while addressing a political rally in Bulathsinhala on September 6.
His comments came in response to opposition claims that the Government could seek to postpone a future Presidential Election and instead hold a referendum.
The President rejected those claims and said the Government had no intention of postponing national elections.
He said both Presidential and Parliamentary Elections would be held as scheduled.
The President also addressed the long-delayed Provincial Council Elections.
He said Provincial Council Elections would be conducted once the existing legal obstacles preventing them from being held are removed.
Political assurance, not an election proclamation
The President's statement is a political and governmental assurance concerning the timing of future elections.
It is not an election proclamation issued by the Election Commission and does not itself set a polling date.
Likewise, his statement on Provincial Council Elections remains conditional on the legal obstacles being resolved.
Future election dates and formal electoral processes should therefore be reported when announced by the constitutionally or legally responsible authorities.
