Sri Lanka Police's WhatsApp-based emergency access service for members of the hearing-impaired community is scheduled to become operational from 10 September 2026, following its earlier introduction.
Until a dedicated short number is introduced, the service is available through:
011-2809980
How the service works
Users should:
- save 011-2809980 on their phone;
- make a WhatsApp audio call to that number;
- after the call disconnects, wait for the link sent to the device;
- open the link;
- select “Join Browser”;
- select “Join Meeting”.
This establishes video communication with the 119 Emergency Division.
Police say an officer with knowledge of sign language will respond and relay the reported emergency to the relevant police station.
Continuity
The service was introduced in connection with the 160th Police Day on 3 September.
Police subsequently announced that arrangements had been completed for activation from 10 September.
