Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved plans to enter into labour-cooperation arrangements with Thailand, including a five-year agreement concerning employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers.
The package includes a memorandum of understanding on labour cooperation and a separate agreement covering the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.
The stated objectives include creating more formal recruitment channels and strengthening protections against exploitation and human trafficking.
Signing approved, implementation still to follow
Cabinet approval means the Government has authorised the proposed agreements to be signed.
It does not by itself establish that a new recruitment programme is already accepting Sri Lankan workers or that jobs are immediately available.
Implementation will depend on the final signing, administrative arrangements, recruitment procedures and conditions established by the two countries.
Workers should therefore rely on formal Government announcements before paying intermediaries or acting on claims of new employment opportunities.
