The Port of Colombo has moved into the world's top 20 container ports, rising six places from 26th position as container traffic increased strongly during the first half of 2026.
According to figures from Alphaliner cited by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Colombo ranked 20th in the latest global container-throughput ranking.
The port handled approximately 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the first six months of 2026, up 11.9% from the corresponding period a year earlier.
The comparable first-half 2025 volume was about 3.97 million TEUs.
Current reporting gives the more precise totals as 4,444,034 TEUs in the first half of 2026, compared with 3,972,053 TEUs in the first half of 2025, an increase of 471,981 TEUs.
Why Colombo Port matters
Colombo is one of the Indian Ocean region's major transshipment hubs.
A substantial proportion of the containers moving through the port are transferred between ships rather than representing goods imported into or exported directly from Sri Lanka.
Its performance therefore has implications beyond Sri Lanka's domestic trade, including the country's ability to compete for regional transshipment business linking shipping routes between Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority says further investment in container handling, logistics and port capacity will be important if Colombo is to maintain and strengthen that position.
What the ranking means
The latest result represents a significant improvement in Colombo's position among the world's busiest container ports.
However, it should be understood as a ranking based on the latest available container-throughput data rather than a permanent designation.
Port rankings can change as traffic volumes at Colombo and competing international ports change.
