Sri Lanka AI Week 2026 has begun as a multi-day programme bringing together students, technology companies, policymakers and international artificial-intelligence specialists.
The programme runs from September 25 to 30 and is being organised as a national technology initiative led by the Ministry of Digital Economy and SLT-MOBITEL.
University hackathon opens programme
An AI Hackathon involving students from 27 public and private universities formed one of the opening components of the programme.
The wider AI Week programme includes events for industry leaders, technology professionals, students and the public.
The main national AI conference and public Expo are scheduled for September 29–30 in Colombo.
International participants include experts associated with major global technology and professional-services companies.
Focus on adoption and skills
The organisers say the programme is intended to promote:
- AI awareness;
- digital skills;
- innovation;
- industry collaboration;
- investment; and
- links between Sri Lanka's technology ecosystem and international AI expertise.
Government and organisers have also presented the programme as part of an ambition to strengthen Sri Lanka's position in the regional AI economy.
That should be described as a policy and programme objective, not as an already achieved outcome.
